How long is the warm November weather in Winnipeg expected to stick around?

After a downright pleasant November, inquiring Winnipeg minds may want to know - what’s up with all this warm weather?

We asked the question to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Nearing the end of November, ECCC’s meteorologist Shannon Moodie confirmed that Winnipeg has only seen “one snowfall that I can remember, maybe two.

“Usually, we’ve had a few more bursts of snow. But it is common that it all melts and not uncommon to get into December with no snow on the ground.”

Moodie said this time of year, Winnipeg’s usual high is -5 C but this year it certainly has been above normal.

“Usually we’ll have an Arctic ridge that will slide down and we’ll pull a lot of cold Arctic air through the prairies – there’s really no geographical barrier to really break that Arctic air.

“But we really haven’t had that. This year we’ve had a few systems that have gone through the prairies and have really been focused on like the north, Arctic, or northern prairies, central prairies.”

She said the systems need help to pull warmer air up from the south, and the warmer days in Winnipeg have been “a weather scenario that’s just been very lucky that kind of kept us from getting any cold Arctic air.”

CTV News hit The Forks on Sunday to ask Winnipeggers what they think about the warmer weather.

“This is amazing. It’s warmer than Seattle,” Jacob Schwartz, a former Winnipegger who lives in Seattle now said.

Riding a unicycle, Thomas Biron said this November is probably “the nicest November I’ve had.”

“You know what? Given the summer that we just had, I kind of had a feeling we were going to have a little bit more of a slow entry to winter. I feel like we’re probably going to get hit with a lot more snow once it finally comes.”
