Teen in custody after bringing gun, knives to rural Manitoba school: RCMP

A teenage boy is facing a slew of weapon-related charges after police say he brought a handgun and knives to a rural Manitoba school.

Mounties in St. Pierre-Jolys say they got a report at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday that a male youth with a gun was on his way to Green Valley School in Grunthal, Man.

Police say they immediately notified the school.

According to RCMP, school staff were able to find the teenage boy on school property and get him to hand over the weapons.

“No force was used by school officials during this incident,” Mounties wrote in a news release.

Police arrived and arrested the boy, allegedly seizing an unloaded handgun, a loaded magazine, additional loose ammunition in a container and knives.

According to the Hanover School Division, the Grade 6 to 12 school was placed under lockdown as a precaution while the situation was assessed. The lockdown was lifted later that day.

“The division recognizes that incidents like this can be concerning for students, staff, and families,” the division wrote in a news release.

“School staff are providing support as needed, and the well-being of our school community remains our top priority.”

Police say the teen faces a slew of weapon-related charges, none of which have been tested in court.

A comprehensive investigation is ongoing and the teen remains in custody.
