Magnitude 3.1 earthquake recorded off Vancouver Island

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck around 13 kilometres north of Vancouver Island’s Sidney in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A small earthquake struck off the coast of British Columbia on Tuesday morning.

Earthquakes Canada says the magnitude 3.1 quake occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. local time with its epicentre 13 kilometres north of the Vancouver Island town of Sidney.

The quake was lightly felt throughout the Greater Victoria region, and struck at a depth of 16 kilometres.

There have been no reports of damage and none are expected.

Earthquakes Canada says magnitudes of less than 5.4 rarely cause damage.
