Suspect wanted in downtown Sudbury attack turned himself in to police

Suspect charged in weekend Sudbury stabbing A 22-year-old has been charged after a victim was bear-sprayed and stabbed in Sudbury's downtown last weekend.

A 22-year-old man turned himself in to police Tuesday afternoon following an attack downtown over the weekend.

He is accused of stabbing and using bear spray on a victim shortly before 1 a.m. Aug. 18.

 

The suspect fled the scene at the intersection of Elm Street and Elgin Street before officers arrived, but detectives were able to determine his identity.

 

He is charged with aggravated assault, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused surrendered just after 2:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at police headquarters, Greater Sudbury Police Service said in an update Wednesday.

The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the attack and remains in hospital in stable condition.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 18.

He was released on an undertaking, Sudbury police spokesperson Sarah Kaelas told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

Police are calling the case an "isolated incident" with no threat to public safety.
