Northern woman charged after shoplifting, confrontation with police: OPP

OPP charge 19-year-old after they allegedly loaded a laundry basket with items from an Elliot Lake store, left without paying, then fled & assaulted an officer.

A 19-year-old local woman faces multiple charges following an incident at a retail store on Hillside Drive South in Elliot Lake over the weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police said the East Algoma detachment responded to a report that a person had loaded a laundry basket with multiple items and left the store without paying at about 7:30 p.m. on April 12.

Confrontation with police

Police said officers found the suspect a short time later.

“Police located the person walking on Ontario Avenue a short time after, and when confronted, the person became irate, attempted to flee and assaulted police officers,” OPP said in a news release Monday.

“After a brief altercation, the person was arrested and charged.”

The woman has been charged with theft, assaulting a peace officer and resisting a peace officer.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on June 11.
