Heavy rain forecast Tuesday in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie

Significant rainfall is expected most of the day Tuesday in areas in and around Greater Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island.

In a special weather statement for both areas, Environment Canada said between 15 and 25 mm of rain will fall, tapering off this evening.

“The frozen or nearly saturated ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall,” the statement said.

“Confidence is low regarding rainfall amounts. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions. Water may pool on roads and in low-lying areas.

Residents are reminded not to drive through flooded roadways and to watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

In an update Monday, Conservation Sudbury said its flood warning for the middle and lower Vermilion River watersheds, and lower Junction Creek watershed remains in place.

“The Onaping River at Dowling and Upper Vermilion River at Desmarais Road have been reduced to a flood watch,” Conservation Sudbury said.

While watersheds across the region overall have been declining in the last week, they remain “extremely elevated.”

“The currently forecast precipitation has the potential to further raise water levels or reverse the recently observed decreasing trend,” the update said.

These higher water levels are expected to persist for at least another week and residents living in floodplains should remain vigilant.
