Montreal’s mayor finds Fréchette’s approach ‘refreshing’

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette met with Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and discussed homelessness and other topics.

Soraya Martinez Ferrada says she had “good, lengthy discussions” with Christine Fréchette during the premier’s courtesy visit to Montreal City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

They discussed housing, homelessness, public transit, and infrastructure, among other topics.

The mayor of Montreal said she appreciates the new leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec’s approach to municipal affairs.

“I want to thank her for the way she addressed the issue of municipalities, the city, and the regions. Historically, there has always been this somewhat polarizing relationship between the regions and Montreal. It’s refreshing to hear a premier talk about how we are a lever for one another,” said Martinez Ferrada in the brief speech she delivered after the roughly 30-minute meeting held in the ceremonial lounge at City Hall.

She emphasized the importance of “collaborating,” “standing together,” and “developing an economy that will be strong for all of Quebec, including the city.”

Her message was echoed in the premier’s remarks. “Indeed, I believe a closer partnership must be established,” stated Fréchette.

“I’m very glad we were able to meet because we have big plans for the city—and, by extension, for Quebec as a whole—since what happens in the city also has an impact on the rest of Quebec,” she added.
