Newspapers from around the globe flashed explosive headlines the day after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated a global trade war.
On Wednesday, Trump broadened his trade war by announcing tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners, imposing a baseline 10 per cent tax on all imports. The president said the tariffs were designed to boost domestic manufacturing, saying the United States had been “looted, pillaged, raped and plundered” by “foreign scavengers.”
“Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years,” Trump said from the White House Rose Garden. “But it is not going to happen anymore.”
As for the U.S. trading partner to the north, Canada was not dealt higher levies on what Trump had previously imposed -- 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum as well as 25 per cent tariffs on foreign-made automobiles. Goods that comply with the USMCA North American trade pact would be excluded.
Thursday editions of newspapers flashed hardened headlines to the likes of “Trump Upends Global Trade” and “Canada dodges trade bullet.”
