Police arrested a 24-year-old man Friday evening after an alleged carjacking in northwest Winnipeg.

In a Saturday news release, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) said the suspect threatened and attacked a 25-year-old man in the sub-100 block of Keewatin Avenue before stealing the victim’s 2019 Honda Civic. Police said the victim didn’t require medical attention.

Shortly after, police received reports the stolen vehicle was being driven recklessly nearby and that it had collided with another motorist on St. Matthews Avenue. Police said the suspect abandoned the car and took off on foot.

Patrolling officers and the WPS canine unit found the suspect in the 1300 block of St. Matthews Avenue where he was arrested.

Police said the suspect was taken to hospital in stable condition and provided medical care for injuries sustained during the crash. The occupants of the other vehicle were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is facing several charges including robbery, uttering threats, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

He was released on an undertaking.
