Vigil held in Winnipeg’s West End for victim of fatal shooting

A vigil was held on April 8, 2025 to mourn the death of Brenton Sean Paul Harper, who was killed in a deadly shooting.

Loved ones gathered near a home in Winnipeg’s West End on Tuesday to mourn the loss of a man killed in a shooting last week.

A vigil was set up near a home on Agnes Street where Brenton Sean Paul Harper, 30, was shot on April 1. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

Harper, who was a member of Garden Hill First Nation but was living in Winnipeg, is being remembered as a good person who never disrespected his family.

Rita, Harper’s mother, said Tuesday was an emotional day for the family. She said she doesn’t want hatred to take over their lives and hopes her son rests in peace.

“Whoever did this took my son’s life,” she said.

“We forgive you. He’s always taught us love. I taught my kids to forgive no matter what.”

Rita said she hopes the person responsible for her son’s death will turn themselves in.

“I would like to see the person be brought to justice as well,” she said.

“But everyone pays for what they do in life. But like I said, for me, I can’t hold a grudge or hate.”

Winnipeg police said there is no update in the investigation.
