A sweatshirt or t-shirt with the Ukrainian coat of arms, also known as a tryzub—it’s a simple look, but one that has become synonymous with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Now, Winnipeggers can dress just like the president.
Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre has been bringing in the Zelenskyy-style shirts as demand for the look has skyrocketed in recent weeks and months.
“There’s been a lot of news coverage of President Zelenskyy. There has been some criticism, obviously, from the United States in terms of his attire. We’ve had a lot of Ukrainians, a lot of non-Ukrainians reach out to our organization wondering how they can get a copy of the same similar wear,” said Brad Salyn, the executive director of Oseredok.
Salyn is referencing the meeting between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the end of February, which erupted into a shouting match.
At one point, Zelenskyy was criticized for what he was wearing—a black sweatshirt that featured the tryzub.
In response, people have been wanting to get their hands on a Zelenskyy-style shirt.
“We have sourced shirts and sweaters from Ukraine, very similar to the style that he wears,” said Salyn.
“We can barely keep the shirts on the shelves at this point because as soon as they have come, they’ve been gone. A lot of people have called in advance and have let us know that as soon as a shipment arrives, they’re happy to take the shirt. A lot of people want to show their support for Ukraine and President Zelenskyy.”
Salyn said getting the shirts from Ukraine helps support Ukrainian producers and manufacturers, while the money raised from people buying the shirts helps support preserving Ukrainian heritage in Winnipeg and Manitoba.
T-shirts range from $40 to $50, while hoodies will be made available next week for purchase.
