Lynn Lake may have to evacuate again as air quality warning issued

Days after residents were told they were allowed to return, people living in Lynn Lake are being told to prepare for potentially another evacuation.

In a post Tuesday evening, the Town of Lynn Lake said an evacuation alert is still in place.

“Please continue to be prepared to leave on short notice, as a mandatory evacuation may be called at any time, depending on fire behavior and changing weather and wind conditions,” the post reads.

A mandatory evacuation could be put in place either Wednesday or Thursday, the town said.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, there is an air quality warning in effect for Lynn Lake.

The warning said there is heavy smoke in the area and everyone’s health is at risk.

“All residents should ensure they have a go-bag packed and ready, including essential items such as identification, medication, important documents, water, and basic supplies,” the town’s Facebook post reads.

In an update Wednesday, the town said fire trucks are being positioned around the community as a precautionary measure, but it was noted there is no imminent threat.

“Winds are expected to shift this evening, with gusts of up to 35 km/h out of the south/southwest. As a result, smoke may become more prevalent in the area due to wind direction and increased fire activity.”

The town will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if the situation changes.

The town announced last week that residents were able to return home last Friday.
