Katherine Dow’s forecast: A pair of systems bring a mixed bag of a weekend forecast

It’s a sunny and warm end to the work week through much of Manitoba, but a pair of low pressure systems could make for a rather damp weekend in some areas.

Much of the south will deal with a mix of sun and cloud or mostly cloudy skies Friday afternoon with strong and gusting southerly winds.

Temperatures in that neck of the woods are likely to peak in the low to mid-teens.

Similar sky conditions are expected in the north, with heavier clouds in western portions. Winds there will be much lighter and not much of a factor.

Highs through much of northern Manitoba will reach the low-teens or upper-single digits.

A wrench, or perhaps two, could be thrown in care of two low pressure systems forecast to cross the Prairies or the northern Plains. They’ll move from west to east starting Saturday and are predicted to end Monday morning.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the system with the most bearing on Manitoba is a northern track low predicted to bring five to 10 cm of snow from Lynn Lake to Gillam. Some freezing rain is expected near the eastern half of this system—particularly between Thompson and the Ontario border overnight Friday and into Saturday.

The second system will likely skirt our province on its way out of southern Saskatchewan or skim the southeastern corner as it tracks into northwestern Ontario overnight Friday.

It’s still unclear what form of precipitation this system will be working with. Warm temperatures could spell rain or sleet, but those above seasonal values also mean amounts will be modest.

Still, it’s predicted Manitoba will escape this system’s soggy fray.

Instead, most of the south can expect partly cloudy skies overnight Friday with southerly winds prevailing at 30 gusting at times to 50 km/h.

Overnight low temperatures will be above seasonal in the low to mid-single digits.

While the northeast continues to deal with snow or snow showers into Saturday, the northwest and southern portions can look forward to mainly sunny skies.

Meanwhile, downright balmy conditions set in across southern Manitoba with less intense westerly winds and highs into the mid to upper teens.
