Colleen Bready’s forecast: Sunshine and cold temperatures on the way

Sunshine returns to Manitoba on Wednesday, but so do cold temperatures that we haven’t experienced in Winnipeg in several months.

The city is forecast to reach just -16 C Wednesday afternoon. The last time the daytime high was that cold in Winnipeg was February 19, when the maximum temperature reached -17.2 C.

Expect similar daytime highs around -16 C or -15 C across southern Manitoba. The trade-off, though, will be sunshine across the region.

Conditions will be similar in northwestern Ontario Wednesday, just with more cloud cover in places.

Meanwhile, bitterly cold air warranted a cold warning over the most northern parts of Manitoba Wednesday morning, where wind chills felt near -45.

The cold warning has ended, but daytime temperatures in the most northern areas will remain in the -20s this afternoon. Regions further south into central Manitoba will see somewhat less biting daytime highs around -19 C or -18 C.

After Tuesday’s Alberta clipper moved quickly through Manitoba, another one is on its way. Snow will move into the northwest and central areas tonight, before spreading across the south on Thursday.

While we await the snow here in the south, overnight lows will drop close to -20 C, including Winnipeg and Brandon. However, regions north of both cities will see temperatures rise overnight as the snow arrives.

The impact of this approaching low-pressure system will be similar to the clipper that passed through yesterday. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts snowfall amounts up to 5 cm, in general.
