Manitoba weather forecast: Soaring temperatures continue

Soaring summertime heat continues on Monday in Winnipeg and across southern Manitoba.

So much so that heat warnings remain in effect for south-central and southeastern regions and in northwestern Ontario.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said daytime highs in the low to mid-30s and overnight lows of 16 C or warmer will continue Monday until Wednesday.

In Winnipeg, Monday’s forecast high is 35 C, which would easily beat the current maximum temperature record for May 12 of 32.8 C set in 1958.

In northern Manitoba, areas further south will reach the low-20s on Monday afternoon, while more northern regions can expect temperatures to rise to the mid and upper teens.

Churchill is the standout, with a high of just 6 C.

The northwest will see a mix of sun and cloud and hazy conditions from wildfire smoke. The northeast will remain cloudy.

Ahead on Monday night, showers or thunderstorms are possible in western regions from Dauphin to Flin Flon and as far east as Thompson.

ECCC said rain will fall along an axis Monday night from Lynn Lake to Churchill, where 10 to 20 mm of rain is possible. Churchill could see freezing rain by Tuesday.

The weather agency said showers and thunderstorms will develop through central and eastern Manitoba on Tuesday.

Prepare for a drastic drop in temperatures in the south later this week as the weather pattern changes.

Temperature models vary greatly, but daytime highs will moderate to the mid-20s on Thursday in rain showers, before chilly single-digit temperatures on Friday as rain showers continue.
