The chief of a First Nation in Manitoba is facing charges of sexual assault.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, Donald Smoke has been charged with two counts of sexual assault. None of the charges have been proven in court.

Smoke is currently the acting chief of Dakota Plains First Nation, located southwest of Portage la Prairie, Man.

Mounties noted the charges come after they received a report of sexual assault in June 2024. Investigators determined the incident took place in Kindersley, Sask., in February 2024.

Police added that the victims are adult females.

Smoke, 53, was arrested in February 2025.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 6.

RCMP is not releasing further details about the assault for the sake of victim privacy.

Smoke’s lawyer says his client is planning to defend himself against the charges in court.
