Windsor grows boxing footprint as host of Golden Gloves Provincial Championship

Windsor was the host of the Golden Gloves provincial boxing championships this weekend.

For the second straight year, Ontario’s top boxers went toe to toe in Windsor for the provincial championships.

Central Park Athletics played host to the 2025 Golden Gloves Provincial Championships across four days, with action wrapping up on Sunday.

Participation this year, organizers say, was around 220 fighters from across Ontario.

Locally, the sport has seen more Windsor-Essex-based fighters find success in the ring. From the Border City Boxing Club, Rosalind Canty and Samantha Bumbaca both earned gold medals in their respective weight classes.

Canty, who took home gold on home turf for the second consecutive year, said she’s seen growth in the event and her club’s presence.

“It’s incredible, it’s really good team experience; we’re growing as a club. This is growing as an event,” Canty told CTV News on Sunday.

After being the club’s lone fighter last year, Canty was joined by five other fighters from Border City Boxing.

Canty and Bumbaca will both move on to the national championships in Winnipeg next month.

This year, an increase in fighters at the provincial championships meant an additional ring was added.

Josh Canty, Rosalind’s dad and coach, hopes to see the venue potentially host the nationals in the future.

“So, we would love for the nationals to come to Windsor. I don’t think it’s ever been done,” said the elder Canty, the president of Border City Boxing Club.

Windsor’s Che Chedid won his first fight before dropping a “close bout” in the quarter finals, his first showing at a provincial championship.

“It was a lot of fun to compete,” Chedid told CTV News.

Fighters who did not secure gold will still have an opportunity to pave their path to the national championships.

Chedid said he’s hoping to punch his ticket through a fight with the eventual winner of his weight class.

“I think we’ve all put in a lot of work, and in the years to come, there’s going to be more and more people coming up, more and more fighters coming up, and also from the other gyms in Windsor,” he said.

The nationals are expected to run for four days beginning on Nov. 26.
