Windsor couple funds birthing suite for new acute care hospital

Two former health professionals at Windsor Regional Hospital are donating $1.5 million to the new ‘Windsor-Essex Acute Care Hospital.

Dr. Tony Pattinson, an OBGYN and former department chief who retired last year, and his wife, Mary Pattinson, a retired emergency nurse, are funding a new birthing suite.

The donation will be used to purchase equipment and technology in the new hospital.

It will serve as a dedicated space for obstetric surgeries such as c-sections, emergency c-sections, and other high-risk births.

The couple is hoping to inspire others to donate as well

“This is just sort of the kickstart. I think that we can’t be passive about this as a community. We have to get involved and start to think about how we can make a better health care system in our city. And whether we can donate to that,” said Mary.

The new acute care hospital will be located on a 60-acre site at the corner of County Road 42 and the 9th Concession.

Construction is expected to begin by 2026. The planning process is currently in Stage 2, procurement — selecting a developer with the capability to design and construct a large hospital project.
