WECHU warns of possible measles exposure locations in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is warning the public about possible measles exposure locations. CTV Windsor’s Travis Fortnum reports.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is warning the public of potential measles exposure.

The health unit received lab confirmation of a measles case of someone who goes to Cornerstone Christian Academy in Ruthven. The potential exposure was from Feb. 21 to Feb. 24.

If your child goes to Cornerstone Christian Academy, you have to contact WECHU as soon as possible beginning at 8:30 Wednesday. Isolate until contact is made.

The health unit said it is working with the school to identify any potential exposures and give guidance where needed.

“The WECHU reminds those who may have been exposed to contact the health unit and monitor for symptoms of measles that may appear seven to 21 days after exposure,” read a news release.

Two additional points of exposure have now been identified and the WECHU is providing further direction regarding steps to take for residents who may have been exposed.

Any unvaccinated or immunocompromised residents who attended this walk-in clinic on the date and times specified above are asked to call the WECHU at 519-258-2146 extension 1420 at their earliest convenience for further assessment and guidance.

“Symptoms can include a fever, runny nose, cough, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. A rash may start from the face and progress down the body. If you develop these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.”

Measles can spread through the air when someone who is infected coughs, talks, or sneezes, and another person breathes in particles. Particles can stay in the air up to two hours after the infected person has left the space.

If you are pregnant, immune-compromised, or have a child less than 12 months old, you should contact your health care provider for medical advice.
