SIU invokes mandate on Walpole Island First Nation

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after police responded to a weapons call on Walpole Island First Nation over the weekend.

On Sunday just before 9 a.m., Lambton County OPP, alongside Walpole Island Police Service and Chatham-Kent Police Service, responded to the incident involving a gun. According to police, an interaction took place between the subjects of the complaint and officers.

No injuries were reported, however a “shelter in place” warning was initiated. It has since lifted.

The Walpole Island First Nation Council said it was an “active shooter situation” in a social media post.

According to the SIU, the incident took place in the area of Pumphouse Road and Shawnee Road. An interaction took place between police and an unlisted number of occupants in a suspect vehicle. Officers discharged their guns in the incident.

The suspect vehicle reportedly fled the scene, before two of the suspects were arrested. No one was seriously injured in the altercation.

The SIU continues its investigation.
