Mike Seguin wins LaSalle byelection

Mike Seguin has won the LaSalle byelection, according to unofficial results released by the town on Monday night.

Voters in LaSalle have tabbed Mike Seguin as the town’s newest councillor.

Seguin received 1,197 votes, according to the unofficial results released by the town. Online voting for the fall byelection closed at 8 p.m. on Monday.

Seguin is a former superintendent for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

In an interview with CTV News Monday evening, Seguin said it was a “pleasant surprise” to learn the news.

“Because as a first-time candidate in a municipal election, I had a lot to learn along the way, and I’d really like to thank my team because they worked really hard to get to this point,” Seguin said by phone.

The next closest candidate, Brad Krewench, finished 373 votes behind Seguin.

Support from voters, Seguin credited to “being in tune” with the priorities of residents.

“The number one and two priorities are the spending that is occurring, and also what the taxation level is. That’s what people are most concerned about, so that’s what I’d be focused on first and foremost,” Seguin said.

Outside of education, Seguin is the president of LaSalle Minor Hockey and the music director with the Windsor Optimist Youth Band.

Seguin will serve on council for about a year before Ontario holds municipal elections in October 2026.

When asked about the short timeline, he noted that previous experience in meetings and budgets have prepared him to hit the ground running.

“My start will basically be first of all, I need to know who does what and find out what reports are coming up next, because it is a short amount of time that I have to hit the ground running, and the only way I’m going to do that is to talk and to be meeting with a lot of people,” he added.

Earlier this year, council voted in favour of a byelection to fill the seat vacated after councillor Sue Desjarlais passed away in April.

The online election was disrupted due to a Canada Post strike that meant voters had to pick up their Voter Information Letter (VIL) in person.

PINs contained in each letter were required to cast an online ballot.

The town is expecting to hold the swearing-in for the newest councillor on Oct. 28.
