‘I am ready for the fight’: Windsor Symphony Orchestra Maestro’s cancer returns

The Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has announced its Maestro’s cancer has returned.

Robert Franz said after a successful cancer treatment three years ago, he has been re-diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

“In January after many tests, my Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma returned,” he said.

“I have an amazing team working with me at the Windsor Cancer Centre. I began treatment two weeks ago and I have a significant protocol to go through for the next three months. That will be followed by a stem cell transplant at the end of spring. I can assure you I will attach this as intensely as humanly possible and that I am ready for the fight.”

Franz has served as the WSO’s music director for the last 12 years. The orchestra said his boundless energy and artistic expertise has become a staple to Windsor-Essex.

“We are sad that Robert has to go through this again, but we know his spirit and strength will pull him through,” said Deborah Severs, WSO board president.

“He is so positive and tenacious. His WSO family is here to support him in every way we can.”

The remaining OnStage and Café concerts will be led by resident conductor, Geoffrey Larson. Franz will lead the two final Masterworks concerts, “Lucid Dreams Cello Concerto”, on March 22 and March 23, and Masterworks “Tchaikovsky” on May 3 and May 4.

Franz is optimistic during this time. The WSO said his team is confident in his ability to continue the fight and he is committed to staying active in treatment and in leading the orchestra.
