Teenagers in the area, ages 16, 17, and 18, are eligible to become a poll worker during the upcoming federal election.

Not only will the opportunity help boost you resume, but you will also get paid for your time. If you are not available on April 28, election day, but can work weekends, you can opt to help with advanced polling.

“It’s a very rewarding experience,” said Diane Benson with Elections Canada.

“The days are long, but they’re very rewarding. Another thing, if you work on the Good Friday or Easter Monday, there’s a little bit of extra holiday pay in there.”

Eligible candidates must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 16 years old on election day
  • Be non-partisan and refrain from any partisan political activity during the term of your employment

You are not eligible under the Canada Elections Act if you have one of these positions:

  • Federal ministers and members of provincial executive councils
  • Senators
  • Sitting members of the House of Commons or of provincial or terrirorial legislative bodies
  • Certain judges
  • People who were candidates in the last general election or in a by-election held since the last general election
  • People who have served in Parliament in the session immediately before the election or in the session in progress at the time of the election
  • Anyone found guilty of an offence under an electoral law relating to federal, provincial, municipal, or school board elections or under the Referendum Act in the previous seven years
