B.C. mother killed by falling tree while walking with children, police say

A mother of two was killed by a falling tree in B.C.’s Fraser Valley on Monday, as strong winds were blowing through the region.

The 28-year-old Chilliwack resident was walking with her children on a trail in Island 22 Regional Park when the tree came crashing down on her, according to the RCMP.

“The weather at the time was severe and unpredictable, marked by high winds and heavy rain,” the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment said in a news release Tuesday.

“At this time, there is no indication of this being anything other than a tragic and unforeseen event.”

Bystanders called 911 and paramedics attempted to provide life-saving care, but the woman died at the scene, according to the UFVRD.

The victim’s two young children were “not physically harmed, and are with family,” the RCMP said.

Authorities have notified the woman’s next of kin, but said they will not be releasing her name out of respect for the family’s privacy.
