A Vancouver officer who struck and seriously injured a pedestrian when driving on the Downtown Eastside last year could face charges, according to the province’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. announced Monday that a report has been forwarded to Crown counsel for consideration of charges in the collision.

On May 21 of last year around 12:30 a.m. the officer was driving on East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue when “their police vehicle struck a pedestrian,” the IIO said in a statement. The pedestrian – a man – was seriously injured and taken to hospital, according to the IIO.

“Reasonable grounds exist to believe that the officer may have committed driving offences in relation to the use of their vehicle,” a statement from the agency said.

The statement did not indicate the charges the officer could face and did not say whether the charges would be for violations of the Motor Vehicle Act or Criminal Code offences.
