Robbery and assault charges laid after wellness check on Vancouver Island

Published:

A 34-year-old man is facing several charges – including robbery and assault with a weapon – after being arrested during a wellness check on Vancouver Island Wednesday.

Officers from the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP detachment were called around 8 a.m. to check on the well-being of two people – a man and a woman – in the 1300 block of Stelly’s Cross Road, the detachment said in a news release Friday.

While they were investigating, police “received information regarding a prior violent incident” involving the man who was the subject of the check, Mounties said.

“To that effect, police arrested the 34-year-old man and transported him to the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP detachment, where he was processed and held in custody,” the release reads.

He has since been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, theft under $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, police said.

They added that the suspect and the victim are known to each other, and police do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public.

Online court records indicate the accused is Kyle Bradley Goodyear. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Port Alberni provincial court on April 15.
