Crews battle a garage blaze at a home in Surrey Sunday morning.

A number of residents in Surrey have been displaced after a large fire tore through their garage Sunday morning.

Twelve firefighters and four crews were called to a residential structure fire on the 14800 block of 103rd Avenue, Surrey Fire Service Asst. Chief Greg McRobbie said Sunday afternoon.

Crews arrived to find the garage behind the home “fully engulfed” in flames, and immediately got to work hosing it down to avoid it spreading to the main building, said McRobbie.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from outside the single-storey garage to ensure their safety should the building collapse, before utilizing the fire truck’s aerial device to propel water from above.

Surrey fire Firefighters worked to ensure the blaze wouldn't spread to the home.

No injuries were reported, said McRobbie. Given a vehicle was “luckily” parked in the driveway as opposed to the garage, repairs won’t likely be as costly as they could have been, he added.

Three people, however, have been displaced due to the power and hydro in the home being cut off.

Photos taken from the scene show debris and items the firefighters had to navigate to put out the blaze, including garbage, garden furniture and a large-scale tent.

McRobbie said garages kept clean and in “good, working condition,” alongside homeowners being wary of where combustible products – including ovens, gas water heaters, wood-burning stoves, and clothes dryers – are stored, ensures there is less chance of garage fires spreading to homes.
