Mounties are investigating after a man narrowly escaped a targeted shooting that left his vehicle riddled with bullets in British Columbia’s Interior region.

Police were called to a report of gunshots the 300 block of Mara Lane in Sicamous at around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses at the scene described two suspects fleeing in a white SUV before police arrived, the Sicamous RCMP said in a statement Monday.

Investigators say the intended target of the shooting – a Sicamous man who is known to police – fled in a truck and was located unharmed.

“His truck, which was found to have multiple bullet holes, was seized as part of the investigation,” the statement said.

After a description of the suspect vehicle was broadcast to neighbouring RCMP detachments, Mounties in Salmon Arm attempted to stop a white SUV travelling west toward the rural community of Canoe, police said.

The SUV failed to stop but was later found abandoned near the Trans-Canada Highway in Canoe, according to the statement.

Police dogs and an emergency response team searched the area for the suspects, who were located and arrested “in a residential area of Canoe after successful dog tracks,” the statement said.

Investigators say the suspects remain in custody and are known to the RCMP in Alberta.

“A shooting in a residential area during midday is alarming,” Sgt. Murray MacNeil said in the statement. “However, this was an isolated, targeted incident with both suspects in police custody.”
