Police seek witnesses to crash that killed cyclist in Burnaby

Police were on scene investigating a fatal collision in Burnaby for most of the day Friday.

The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. on Sprott Street near the Scotia Barn sports complex, according to a brief statement from Burnaby RCMP.

Nearly a kilometre-long stretch of the road, spanning Norland and Kensington avenues, was shut down for the investigation.

Images from the scene showed police focusing their attention on the wheels of a semi-truck with two trailers attached to it. Numerous evidence markers had been placed along a stretch of roadway near the entrance to Highway 1.

A yellow tarp could be seen adjacent to the semi-truck, possibly covering a body.

Police asked drivers to take alternate routes, and the road closure remained in place throughout the day.

While Mounties confirmed the crash was fatal, they provided few details about what happened.

In an update shared at 8 p.m. Friday, Burnaby RCMP said the crash involved a cyclist and a semi-truck, and asked for witnesses and dash cam video.

The cyclist died at the scene and no one else was injured in the incident, police said, adding that the driver of the semi-truck remained on scene and has been co-operative.

Impairment has been ruled out as a factor in the crash, according to RCMP.

“Our Criminal Collision Investigation Team is working to determine the cause of the crash,” said Cpl. Laura Hirst, in the statement.

“Our investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision and have not yet spoken to police on scene, or if you have dash cam video in the area, we ask you contact our investigators.”

Police are specifically looking for video recorded on Sprott Street near Kensington Avenue between 7:40 a.m. and 8:10 a.m., according to the statement.

Anyone who has such video or was in the area during that time should call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and quote file number 2025-42284, police said.
