Police investigating Nanaimo, B.C., school threats ask caller to ‘please call back’

Police in Nanaimo, B.C., say they are scaling back their presence at two local secondary schools even as they continue to investigate the source of unspecified threats against the schools.

The RCMP say investigators haven not been able to substantiate the threats levelled earlier this week against both Wellington High School and Nanaimo District Secondary School.

Police say a caller provided information to investigators but the person who placed the call did not reveal their identity.

“To properly assess the information, we are asking for this person to please call back so that their information can be assessed further,” said Const. Gary O’Brien in a statement Thursday.

Police will continue to monitor the schools and communicate with staff, but officers will no longer be posted at the facilities starting Friday, the statement said.

Authorities have not released details of the threats other than to say they were directed at the schools.

On Wednesday, the detachment announced it was deploying officers to the secondary schools out of “an abundance of caution” following the threats.

“We recognize the presence of additional officers at these schools may be uncomfortable for some,” O’Brien said in a release Wednesday.

“Please be assured that the safety of the students, the staff and the facilities is paramount to us.”
