New Westminster restaurant launches famous election burger poll

Published:

With the federal election less than three weeks away, a New Westminster burger restaurant is continuing its decades-old tradition.

With the federal election race heating up, a New Westminster burger restaurant is continuing a long-standing tradition.

Whether it’s a municipal, provincial, or federal election, Burger Heaven has held its “burger poll” for more than 30 years.

Customers can now pick from the five unique burgers representing each of five party leaders.

The Mark Carney Burger features “a liberal slab of bacon,” aged cheddar, lettuce, tomato and a “zesty” sauce.

The Pierre Poilievre Burger swaps the bacon for “aromatic onion” and can be customized to come with mushrooms and pickled beets.

The Jagmeet Singh Burger features orange cheddar and is served on a multigrain bun with onions, tomato and a “tangy” sauce.

The Elizabeth May/Jonathan Pedneault Burger comes with “a dollop of green relish,” mayonnaise, “a slice of organic garden tomato and Saanich goat cheese.” It can be ordered sans bun as a lettuce wrap.

The Yves-François Blanchet Burger includes crisp greens, French dressing “piquant” sauce and Quebec bleu cheese.

A sixth burger, known as the ‘undecided burger’ is also available.

General Manager Chris Geib says while some choose based off of their actual political choice, for others, its all about the ingredients.

“It’s a mixture of both. Some people do actually choose with who they’re going to vote with, and then there’s other people that just go with the burger themselves, probably about a 50/50 split,” he said.

As of Friday afternoon, the Liberals and the Mark Carney Burger had a sizeable lead over the Pierre Poilievre Burger.

The NDP sat just behind the Conservatives, a surprise to Geib, who says due to its popularity in New Westminster, the party traditionally comes out on top.

“This time around, it looks like it might be a bit different,” he said.

The burger polls will be open until April 27.
