Delta police are asking the public for information about a suspected arson, roughly 24 hours after announcing that the fire they’re now investigating was “not suspicious.”

“After the discovery of new evidence, it has been determined that the fire is, in fact, an act of arson,” the Delta Police Department said in a news release Friday.

The department did not elaborate on what the new evidence was that had led to this conclusion.

In their initial statement on the matter on Thursday, police said they were “aware of speculation on social media suggesting the fire was related to an illegal drug laboratory,” but said there was “no evidence or suspicion” of a drug lab in the home that burned.

Police were called to the fire in the 11500 block of 84A Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. They arrived to find the house fully engulfed and all occupants accounted for and uninjured.

“Investigators are appealing to the public that if you have information related to this fire or the person(s) responsible for this fire, call the Delta police at (604) 940-7321 or email tips@deltapolice.ca," the DPD said in its Friday release.

Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, police said.
