‘Gusty’ winds coming to parts of B.C.’s South Coast

Windy conditions are on the way to parts of B.C.’s South Coast Sunday, according to Environment Canada.

The federal agency has issued a special weather statement for Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, Surrey, Langley and the Fraser Valley.

It says “gusty southwesterly winds” will develop early Sunday evening, with those gusts predicted to be up to 80 km/h. Forecasters predict the winds will ease around midnight as the frontal system moves toward the Interior.

“Loose objects could be tossed by the wind and could cause injury or damage. High winds could result in power outages and fallen tree branches,” the alert reads.

The notice comes after heavy rain soaked parts of the Lower Mainland Saturday. According to Environment Canada data, the area that received the most precipitation was Port Mellon in Howe Sound, with 101 millimetres. Squamish received 53 millimetres of rain, Coquitlam between 44 and 59, and West Vancouver between 35 and 40.
