The Vancouver Police Department's Traffic Section shared this photo on social media, showing an overheight load on a truck.

A driver carrying an overheight load caused “major damage” to trolley wires in East Vancouver – resulting in a lengthy road closure and transit detours Thursday.

The incident happened just after midnight on East Hastings Street between Clark and Commercial drives, according to the Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Section.

The maximum height allowed in the area is 4.15 metres and the vehicle’s load exceeded that by 1.3 metres, police said in a social media post.

The driver would have “hit overpasses” if they had made it onto the highway, police added.

“Numerous fines. Major damage to load and trolley wires,” the post continued.

A crane was required to “lift (the) load and place (it) on (a) lower flat deck,” police added.

The trucking company will be responsible for the costs of clearing the scene, according to Metro Vancouver Transit Police – the agency leading the investigation.

The driver was issued eight fines under the Commercial Transport and Motor Vehicle Act, for a total of $1,064, MVTP told CTV News.
