A six-year-old girl was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Surrey Sunday afternoon, according to authorities, who say a driver has since been arrested.

Officers were called to the scene at the intersection of 164 Street and 108 Avenue around 4:10 p.m. for reports that three pedestrians had been struck, the Surrey Police Service said.

“The driver that struck the children did not remain at the scene,” a statement from the department said.

“Surrey Fire Service firefighters and BCEHS paramedics attended the scene and despite life-saving medical interventions, a six-year-old girl died. A seven-year-old girl sustained upper body injuries, and a 16-year-old boy sustained injuries to his leg and torso.”

The injuries to the two other young people are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The suspect vehicle – a grey pickup – hit another parked vehicle before the driver was arrested near 160 Street and 101 Avenue. The driver remains in custody, according to the SPS.

“At this early stage, the cause of the collision remains unknown, but it is believed alcohol may be a contributing factor,” the SPS said.
