‘Hamilton is grieving’: 7-year-old child dead after being struck by city bus

Hamilton police are investigating after a child was struck by a city bus downtown on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the child, who was seven years old, died as a result of their injuries after they were taken to the hospital.

The collision involving the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) bus happened in the area of Emerald and Wilson streets just after 1 p.m.

Police told CTV News there were 15 people onboard the bus at the time of the collision and it is still not known if the child was hit at the front or side of the bus.

It is believed they were with their mother and the pair may have just gotten off the bus at the time. The bus driver remained on the scene.

“My heart goes out to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said a statement.

“The loss of a child is unimaginable, and all of Hamilton is grieving with them. I want to thank the first responders and investigators working at the scene.”

Investigators are asking people to avoid the area while their Collision Reconstruction Unit investigates.

Wilson Street from Tisdale to East Avenue is expected to remain closed for several hours.
