Suspect in Mississauga shooting held up inside home, police say

Peel police are investigating a shooting in Mississauga that has sent a man to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say that the suspect in a Friday morning shooting in Mississauga is held up inside a home in the neighhbourhood.

The shooting happened on Beacon Lane, in the vicinity of Creditview Road and Highway 403, at around 10 a.m.

Police say that reports suggest two males, who are neighbours, were involved in some sort of altercation immediately prior to the shooting.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. However, police say his injuries are now believed to be non-life threatening.

Nearby St. David of Wales Separate School was placed under a hold-and-secure order as a precaution but students were dismissed as scheduled at the end of the day, with assistance from Peel Regional Police.

“We do have information on the suspect and we are currently trying to make contact with him. He is still possibly believed to be armed and negotiations are underway,” Acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene earlier in the day. “It is my understanding he is in a residence.”

Patten said there is a significant police presence in the neighbourhood while officers attempt to make contact with the suspect.

She said officers do not consider the incident to be a “barricaded person as of yet.”

In an updated provided to CTV News Toronto later on Friday afternoon, police said that officers were communicating with the suspect.

“We are asking anyone to please avoid the area if possible. If you are inside your residence and don’t necessarily have anywhere to go at this time please stay in your residence,” Patten said.

Patten said that its believed that both the suspect and the victim live on the same street and were known to each other.

The victim, police say, was located outside. However, it remains unclear whether the shooting took place on the street or in a nearby home.

“This was a targeted incident,” Patten said.
