The provincial health ministry issued an alert on Monday following a spike of reported overdoses in Saskatoon over the last 24 hours.
“[The] Saskatoon Fire Department has reported 14-plus overdoses in Saskatoon in the past 24 hours. Dangerous drugs are in the area,” the Ministry of Health said in the alert.
“Other agencies may have responded to additional overdoses. There is a higher risk of overdose and death from drugs in the city.”
In some cases, Sask. Health says the overdoses were opioid-related, and naloxone was effective to reverse the symptoms.
“In at least one case, the individual required multiple doses of naloxone.”
The Ministry of Health cautions the public that the use of illegally acquired drugs poses health risks that can be reduced, but not eliminated.
To keep themselves safer, the ministry advises people to never use alone, carry naloxone, and if possible, test their drugs.
“The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects those who seek emergency help during an overdose or those who witness an overdose.”
