Despite a declining trend across Canada, Saskatchewan is seeing job numbers continue to rise as unemployment falls.
Statistics Canada’s latest jobs report shows Saskatchewan with the lowest unemployment rate among the provinces, at 4.9 percent in March. Nationally, the unemployment rate rose slightly last month to 6.7 percent.
While Canada saw nearly 33,000 jobs lost in March, Saskatchewan posted a gain of 6,600 jobs last — a jump of 1.1 precent, and the largest gain in the country.
The other provinces to post job increases were British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland.
Saskatchewan is also top in the country in year-over-year job increases, posting a 3.1 per cent increase from March of 2024 to March of this year.
Premier Scott Moe touted the job numbers on Friday, saying Saskatchewan is offering some much-needed certainty in a very uncertain world.
“You see in Saskatchewan today our exports continue to climb year-over-year-over-year,” Moe said during a news conference describing upcoming trade missions to Germany and the U.K. amid the ongoing trade war with the U.S.
Nationally, the biggest job declines last month were felt in wholesale and retail trade.
Across Canada, employment also fell in agricultural industries, and the information, culture and recreation sectors in March.
