Sask. police keeping close eye on World Series and Halloween celebrations

Police in Saskatchewan will be watching the streets extra carefully tonight with Halloween activities and Game 6 of the World Series taking place.

Police want to avoid a repeat of what happened 32 years ago, the last time the Toronto Blue Jays played in and won the World Series.

On Oct. 23, 1993, when the Blue Jays defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Joe Carter’s walkoff home run to win the World Series, thousands of people flocked to 8th Street in Saskatoon to celebrate. The scene turned ugly with property and businesses vandalized.

Many people started to riot, with police forced to use tear gas and batons to control the crowd. The night ended with at least a dozen people arrested.

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) says it has a plan in place this year and will be watching to see how things play out with the game.

The SPS will also be conducting a check-stop focused on impaired driving in conjunction with Halloween.

The Prince Albert Police Service says officers will also be out on patrol to ensure people are safely trick-or-treating and taking in World Series celebrations.

The Blue Jays host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight in Game 6 of the World Series, with a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. If the Dodgers win tonight, Game 7 will be held Saturday in Toronto.
