Second man charged with murder in Chad Romanski’s death

Saskatoon police say they’ve arrested a second person in connection with the death of 31-year-old Chad Romanski.

A 39-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday – a day after the first suspect, Gage Ulmer-Busler, 30, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping.

According to a Saskatoon police release, the second suspect faces charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, assault with a weapon and several firearm offences. He is also accused of interfering with human remains and breaching court-imposed conditions.

He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

Ulmer-Busler made his first court appearance Wednesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court - about five months after Romanski’s remains were found near Highway 7.

Inside the courtroom, Ulmer-Busler stood behind the glass of the prisoner’s box and nodded as the judge confirmed he understood the charges. He told the court he plans to hire his own lawyer.

The judge then read a list of 14 people Ulmer-Busler is prohibited from contacting.

‘Our goal is to get to the truth’

Arresting Gage Ulmer-Busler wasn’t simple, according to a police detective involved.

“This was a very complex investigation,” Det. Sgt. Matt Ingrouille told reporters outside the courthouse.

“We employed a lot of outside-of-the-box techniques to get to where we are today.”

Ingrouille doesn’t believe drugs or gangs were involved in Romanski’s death, and expects another arrest will be made.

“Investigations like this, and violence like this, in our community, the impacts are far-reaching and very wide,” he said.

“As a society, we need to get together and speak out against violence and cooperate with police investigations. Our goal is to get to the truth.”
