Huskies come back to win first-ever Canada West men's soccer title

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's soccer squad celebrates its first-ever Canada West title Saturday.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s soccer team lifted the Canada West trophy for the first time in the team’s history Saturday.

The dogs came back from a 2-1 deficit to down the University of Alberta Golden Bears 4-2 at home on PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon.

Huskie forward Bobbi Nicholat scored the tying goal in the 64th minute after sliding a Mitch Bauche pass through rookie Bears keeper Connor James. The dogs then jumped to a 3-2 lead in the 81st minute when Huskie captain Jordian Farahani headed in a Brett Levis free kick.

David Brown provided the 4-2 insurance for the dogs with a penalty kick score in the 86th minute.

The win marked the first time the University of Saskatchewan team was crowned Canada West champions.

The squad earned the right to host the Canada West Final Four after winning a quarter-final match late last month. They landed their spot in the conference final with a win Friday over the University of Victoria Vikes.

Both the Huskies and Bears will travel to Prince Edward Island next week for the CIS championship.
