Some Sask. pharmacies now able to test for strep throat and ear infections

WATCH: Some Saskatchewan pharmacists can now diagnose and treat cases of ear infections and strep throat.

Certain pharmacies around Saskatchewan are now able to evaluate people for strep throat and ear infections.

A news release from the province Wednesday announced that 11 pharmacies have been selected to conduct testing for both strep throat and ear infections while 37 have been chosen to offer ear infection assessments only.

Pharmacies providing the assessments can be seen online.

According to the province, an investment of more than $700,000 was announced in September to expand the ability of pharmacies to offer expanded care for patients.

“With this new training, pharmacists can perform rapid testing for strep throat where a sample is collected and tested on site, with results available in approximately 10 minutes. Ear infections require a physical assessment only. The pharmacist can then prescribe and dispense medication if required,” the release said.

More than 140 pharmacists have been trained and are taking part in the new program, according to the province.

More pharmacies may be allowed to take part in the future, depending on early success of the current pharmacies.

The province says there are currently more than 430 licenced community pharmacies in Saskatchewan and nearly 1,300 pharmacists.
