Questions surrounding university non-profits remain following lack of mention at meeting

WATCH: URSU held their annual general meeting without mention of UR Pride or the Women’s Centre, leaving some wondering about the future of the organizations.

The University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) held their annual general meeting (AGM) to discuss various topics concerning the student body on Friday.

One of the union’s biggest issues students hoped were addressed was the possible referendum regarding future funding for three organizations within the university.

The U of R’s Women’s Centre, UR Pride and Engineers Without Borders are all a part of the referendum to be passed to the student body on whether it should continue collecting fees.

In September, the URSU executive committee passed motions to present the referendum, which was met with backlash.

The URSU AGM lasted over two hours without any mention of the referendum or the organizations it involves until the very end, when an attendee asked about it.

Because no students brought the topic to URSU to be included in the agenda, it could not be discussed within the meeting.

URSU president Mahad Ahmad declined to comment on the situation.

McKayla Hamilton, an education student at the University of Regina, said students need to be more informed where their fees are going to.

“We pay this money. Our union should be supporting us and making sure we feel safe in our own university,” she said.

The election process for the next URSU leadership will begin in a few weeks.
