Big Brothers Big Sisters launched a fundraiser to match 55 kids with mentors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Regina have launched its “55 Doors” fundraiser to match 55 children with mentors.

The organization has the volunteers in place but needs funds to make the matches happen. It costs about $1,500 to recruit, screen, train and support one match for a year.

Amy Mohr, director of development and communications, says the children on the waitlist face significant challenges.

“Having a mentor, someone who comes in to hang out with them because they think they’re cool … that developmental relationship can change the trajectory of a child’s life,” she said.

The organization hopes to reach its fundraising goal by February.

Both hope young people recognize the value of farm experience, especially as the average age of Canadian farmers continues to rise.
