Pembroke Regional Hospital introduces new masking rules as respiratory viruses circulate

The Pembroke Regional Hospital is mandating masks in the emergency department and while visiting a patient in a clinical unit, as it looks to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses.

The hospital in Pembroke, Ont. announced the new masking requirements due to the high rates of RSV, influenza and COVID-19 among patients and staff, and in the community.

There is currently an RSV outbreak in the hospital’s rehabilitation unit and an influenza outbreak it the medical unit.

“We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding as we work together to keep our hospital safe,” Sebine Mersmann, President and CEO of the Pembroke Regional Hospital, said in a statement.

“Wearing a mask and ensuring your hands are washed and sanitized are two of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, especially in health care settings where patients are often more vulnerable to infections. By following these measures, we can help prevent the spread of illness and protect our most vulnerable patients.”

Officials say in addition to enhanced masking requirements for staff and physicians, patients and visitors “who are able” will need to wear a provided procedure/surgical mask when visiting the Emergency Department, while sitting in the ER waiting room and while visiting a patient in a clinical unit.

Masks will not be required in public areas, such as hallways, elevators, other waiting rooms/areas and the cafeteria.
