Thousands of Hydro One customers in Ontario remain without power following a weekend ice storm, including parts of eastern Ontario.

No hydro outages were reported in the Ottawa area following the several hours of freezing rain on Sunday.

According to Hydro One’s outage map, there are multiple power outages in the Leeds and Thousand Islands region west of Brockville.

That includes an outage impacting more than 400 customers from Mallorytown Landing to Darlingside - a stretch of about 13 km along the Thousand Islands Parkway.

“It’s been a crazy 48 hours,” says Leeds and Thousand Islands Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke.

“We’ve had an incredible number of phone calls from both residents and calls for service from the fire department. Everything from downed power lines to CO2 alarms, all sorts of stuff. So, it’s been a very busy time for the township.”

The area impacted by the outages is a thick forest, and the trees that accumulated ice after Sunday morning’s storm continued to break once the storm ended.

“There are a number of people who’ve been out of power now for close to, pretty close to 24 hours,” says Smith-Gatcke.

Hydro One’s estimated power restoration for the area is 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Hydro One is also reporting nearly 7,000 customers without power in the Kingston area and 4,000 customers in the Verona, Hartington and Syndenham areas.

More details to come.
