Woman taken to hospital following highrise fire in Ottawa’s west end

The Ottawa Paramedic Service says an adult female was taken to hospital following a fire that broke out on the seventh floor of a highrise building located in the city’s west end Sunday morning.

Paramedics say the woman was treated for a moderate injury and taken to hospital in stable condition. Another patient was also assessed at the scene. They were not taken to hospital.

Ottawa Fire Services says emergency crews received multiple calls at 10:49 a.m., reporting alarms were ringing in a commercial highrise located in the 300 block of Croydon Avenue.

When firefighters arrived at the scene and saw smoke was coming from the seventh floor with the fire alarms ringing, they declared a working fire to request additional resources.

Crews note that at 10:59 they rescued one person from the fire.

The fire was declared under control at 11:01 a.m. It was contained to the area of origin before it could spread.

Residents of the building sheltered in an OC Transpo bus, while firefighters fought the fire.

The residual smoke was ventilated out of the structure and residents were allowed to go back inside.

The investigation into what led to the fire is ongoing.
