Unlock your potential to help you grow: Karl Subban

Karl Subban’s newest book is giving readers a look into how you can tap into the power of your potential. He joined us live this morning from Toronto.

One of Canada’s most high-profile hockey parents, Karl Subban, has a new book that can help you unlock your potential to grow.

Raise Your Roof is about building a foundation to allow yourself to grow, Subban told CTV Morning Live. He says unlocking your potential requires support, while sharing his own experience.

“When I came to Canada, I had to find a way to raise a roof that (is) over me, because I was so fearful. I was in a new place and fearful of the people that I didn’t know,” he said.

“So, it was only when I was able to sort of raise those roofs, I was able to close the knowledge gap. I was able to work through the fear by raising those roofs. It gave me enough room to grow.”

The first story in chapter one in the book is about a man who planted a seed and nurtured it to allow it to grow in his home. The plant kept growing inside the man’s house until it reached the ceiling and couldn’t grow anymore, he says.

He says it needed more room to grow.

“So, he (the man) looked at many options and raised the roof and one day it (grew more),” he said.

Planting a seed is just like having a dream that we nurture, Subban explained.

Subban says kids come to school with a lot of potential, noting the educator’s role in raising the roofs that are above them to grow.

As an adult, you shouldn’t limit your potential, he says. Subban notes that your beliefs are among the things that get in the way and block your potential.

He says that fear and doubts can limit you. He said believing in your own potential nurtures your growth mindset.

“One thing I say to young people when I’m speaking to them in school: ‘I believe in my own potential,’” he said.

“I can learn, I can grow, and I can develop.”

Subban is a father of three pro hockey players, PK, Malcom and Jordan. He’s also spent much of his professional life as a school principal.
