Ottawa could see 10-20 mm of rain tonight and Thursday

Ottawa’s stretch of rainy weather will continue this week, with 10 to 20 mm of rain expected tonight and on Thursday.

A total of 18.8 mm of rain was recorded at the Ottawa Airport on Tuesday, after Ottawa received 16.4 mm of rain on Sunday and 9.1 mm on Monday. Environment Canada says Ottawa has received 71.5 mm of rain so far in April.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Ottawa, calling for “additional showers and thunderstorms” possible through Thursday.

“Portions of the region have received significant rainfall amounts over the last few days,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

“As a result, any further rainfall could have significant impacts. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions. Rainfall amounts will likely be highly variable across the region.”

The updated weather forecast calls for 10 to 15 mm of rain on Thursday.

Officials have warned water levels along the Ottawa River are “increasing rapidly” due to the recent rainfall and significant snowmelt. A flood warning has been issued for areas on the Ottawa River in Renfrew County.

It will be cloudy tonight with a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight. Low 8 C.

Thursday will see showers with the risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. High 15 C.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected on Friday with a 30 per cent chance of showers. High 17 C.

The outlook for Saturday calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers. High 22 C.

Sunday will be mainly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of showers. High 8 C.

The normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 12 C and a low of 2 C.

Flood warning

A flood warning has been issued for areas on the Ottawa River in Renfrew County due to the heavy rainfall.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says flooding is expected in low-lying areas between Pembroke and Arnprior.

“Residents that have been affected by high water and flow conditions in the past, should take necessary action to protect/secure any vulnerable property in proximity to rivers and lakes and closely monitor developing conditions and regularly check for updated messages,” the Ministry of Natural Resources says.

“The ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions, further updates will be issued as appropriate.”

On Monday, The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority issued a flood watch for the Mississippi River Watershed in eastern Ontario, from Mazinaw Lake to the Ottawa River near Fitzroy Harbour.

A flood outlook statement was also issued for the Lower Ottawa River, between Arnprior and Hawkesbury.
